Here's the rat, showing up on Hudson Street in lower Manhattan. The rat often shows up, courtesy of some good union folks, when an employer decides he/she doesn't want to pay workers a living wage. And it's always understood that no matter how big this rat is, the other rat -- the employer at this building -- is a bigger rat for not paying workers what they're worth.

Here's an octopus-like sea monster, made entirely of sand, as part of a huge sand sculpture at the New York State Fair. He took a short break from wrecking a wooden ship to briefly pose for the camera.

This is a cow, made entirely of butter, jumping over a moon made out of the same thing. Next to the cow you can see a dish and a spoon who, rumor has it, were running away with each other.

A horse quite unlike any I've ever seen. I wouldn't count on him pulling that wagon very far, but whatever he does, I'm sure he'll look good doing it.

A cat in a place you don't usually see a cat. The cat will be OK there, though -- those railroad wheels are on an old caboose that hasn't moved in at least 20 years, and may not move again for a long long time.

This is both an animal and a sign, and Mack the dog looks pretty tough, but the business he stands for on this sign wasn't quite tough enough to make it through the hard times, it seems.

I think this sign, on a building in Brooklyn, pretty much sums up how a lot of us feel about the recent trouble on Wall Street. A lot of conservatives seem to want to bring back the good old days, which I guess in this case means the Depression -- well, thanks but no thanks.

I saw this sign outside of a store recently, and though it didn't look like they had anything in there I wanted to buy, I just had to go inside after seeing the sign.

Here's a good motto to live by, if anyone's looking for one. I try, but then there's the iPod, the cell phone, the Web site, the youtube videos, the book I haven't quite finished reading, the junk e-mail, the junk snail mail, the non-junk e-mail, the boom box with the wierd electrical problem to fix...

If you can't live by the previous motto, maybe this one will work for you.

Trying to quit smoking? If you put this sign up over your bed, and it was the first thing you saw every morning, maybe it would help. I used to suggest that smokers should be shot for the sake of their own health, but no one ever took my suggestion...

An old sign, from back when TB used to kill a lot of people. If these conservative Republicans really get to have their way, and they cut the funding to the CDC too much, maybe this old sign will be new again.
